create una cuenta AIM eso te dará paso a usar iChat sin pasar por caja

luego puedes ir descubriendo más cosas como por ej. el Adium, pero ese paso déjalo para más adelante, cuando controles un poco más el iChat y te familiarices con el servicio de mensajería instantánea.
