Me auto-respondo: El problema era un problema de permisos , al ser imposible corregirlos con la utlidad de discos -tanto desde el Sistema como arrancando desde el disco de instalacion, opte por una reinstalacion limpia desde el DVD de Snow Leopard, ahora funciona correctamente.
